Description
Benmore Lodge, built around 1874, is located within the Younger Botanic Garden at Benmore House, following significant estate improvements by James Duncan. It is likely designed by architect David Thomson. The lodge, while simple in design, shares stylistic elements with the main house.
This 1½-storey lodge features a Baronial style and has a roughly L-shaped layout, with two gables positioned at right angles at the entrance. The crow-stepped gables are the building's most prominent feature, framed by a stepped corbel-table that outlines the upper floor windows. Each gable includes a hood-moulded bipartite window on the ground floor. The entrance elevation, facing the drive, has a gable on the right, a central door, and a bipartite window to the left, topped by a crow-stepped gablet. Access is through ornate wrought iron gates, flanked by hand-gates and tall railings set on ashlar quadrant dwarf walls. A small George V letter box is attached to the railings.
Currently, the lodge serves as a shop for the Botanic Gardens, and its interior has been modified to suit this purpose. The building is constructed of squared rubble with sandstone ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. It predominantly has plate glass timber sash and case windows.
