Description

The entrance gates to the Younger Botanic Garden at Benmore House are a remarkable example of wrought ironwork, which is rare in Scotland. Dating to circa 1871, the gates are hung on pedimented marble piers, each topped with a wrought iron lantern. The decorative design is in a rococo style, featuring elaborate foliate and floriate motifs with concentric circles at the center, each bearing the initials "JD". The handles are shaped as female mythical figures, and both the gates and lanterns are painted gold.

The Benmore Estate was acquired in 1870 by James Duncan, a Greenock sugar refiner, who subsequently made numerous improvements. The gates originally served as the main entrance to the estate. A simple single-storey lodge, likely designed by Baird of Glasgow around 1850, was demolished circa 1995.

It is believed the gates were either commissioned from Paris by Duncan or purchased there and subsequently altered with the incorporation of his initials. There is a suggestion that they may have been exhibited and awarded a prize at a Paris exhibition in 1871, although no major exhibitions were held in Paris between 1867 and 1878; they may have been displayed at a smaller event.

Benmore Estate is known as the setting for the Younger Botanic Garden, managed by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, famed for its collection of coniferous trees, which have been planted since around 1820.

The gates form part of a group of listed buildings which includes Benmore House, a steading, the North Lodge, gates, "Puck's Hut", the fernery, the walled garden, and the cottages to the east of the garden. The gates are located within the wider Benmore Younger Botanic Garden designed landscape.
