Description
Rinaton is an early to mid-18th century, two-storey and three-bay house with a lower, single-storey and two-bay wing attached to its right side. The east (principal) elevation is harled, while the other elevations are constructed from granite rubble. A boarded timber door, flanked by a simple, narrow two-pane fanlight, is located in the wing to the right. The main elevation features a pair of regularly spaced openings near the eaves on the first floor, along with a window on the ground floor to the right and a later, larger opening in the middle of the ground floor. Most windows are timber sash and case with four panes; the ground floor east window has nine panes in its central portion. The roof is covered in grey slate, and there are gable stacks topped with thackstones. Other details include raised coped skews and skewputts.
The interior retains simple cast iron chimney pieces.
A remarkable ancillary building, also of early to mid-18th century origin, is characterised by a steeply gabled form and a small, deeply recessed timber sash and case window on its south side. The building is constructed from granite rubble and has a corrugated iron roof. A central timber gable entrance door is situated on the west side, with a timbered gable above. Raised skews and skewputts feature on the east side. Inside is a hearth framed by large granite jambs and a lintel, and the roof is a simple A-frame structure with tie-beams.
Rinaton is largely unaltered, though the ground floor fenestration has likely been changed and was originally symmetrical. The ancillary structure is particularly unusual due to its steeply sloping, timber gables. The building was constructed for the Macdonalds of Rineton.
