Description
This is a large, stone military road bridge, constructed around 1749. It features a steeply humped, single arch with a narrow span and a sweeping parapet on the southern side. The bridge is built of stone rubble and has thin flag coping along the parapet.
The bridge is an excellent example of those built on the Military Road connecting Blairgowrie to Fort George, a project completed in 1749. Following Jacobite unrest and the Battle of Culloden, the government initiated a road-building program in the Highlands under General Wade to improve communication for troops; this specific road was established by William Caulfield. The bridge sits within a dramatic rural setting, as evidenced on the 1866 Ordnance Survey map.
In 1994, the building’s category was upgraded from B to A, and the description and statement of significance were updated in 2018.
