Description
The Conglass Bridge, near Tomintoul, dates to around 1830, although it likely incorporates earlier materials. It is a single-span rubble bridge featuring a segmental arch constructed of tooled rubble, rising from tooled rubble abutments. Shallow buttressing is present on the bridge’s winged approaches, terminating in large end pilasters with tooled ashlar cushion caps. A tooled rubble cope forms the parapet. Later cast-iron stays have been added to the structure. The approximate span of the bridge is 40 feet.
The bridge’s construction is linked to the Duke of Gordon, who, by 1794, had commissioned the creation of a road for carriages from Glenrinnes through Glen Livet to Tomintoul. It is believed that the original bridge at this point was damaged or destroyed during significant flooding in August 1829. The cushion end caps are a characteristic feature of bridges built by the Duke of Gordon in the area; one original cap has been replaced with a rendered copy.
