Description

This is a cruciform Gothic church, built in 1837 by George Mathewson of Dundee, with subsequent alterations. The church is constructed of harled walls with granite margins and dressings, oriented east to west. The main entrance is in the west gable, though it has been re-faced internally, with a porch now situated in the southeast re-entrant angle. The west gable features a pointed-head doorway with a fanlight and a plaque above, within a slightly projecting bay, and is flanked by long, narrow, pointed-head windows. Above these windows is a small, stumpy gabled belfry with angle pilasters, stone crosses, and louvred vents. Some of the windows contain lattice-pane glazing.

A three-storey presbytery is incorporated into the eastern arm of the cross-shaped building. A projecting glazed timber porch disguises the presbytery entrance in the centre of the two-bay east gable, which is itself lit by pointed-head sash windows. A small, single-storey gabled wing is located at the northeast corner. The roof is covered with Tomintoul slate.

The interior is a simple, galleried space that was re-cast and altered in 1939. The interior walls are low and constructed of rubble, and there is a burial ground to the west. A pedestrian entrance is located at the west side, flanked by simple gatepiers.

A plaque above the west door reads: "Deo sub tutela B. Maria Virginis et B. Michaelis Archangeli Dedicata MDCCCXXXVII" (Dedicated to God under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Michael the Archangel 1837). The church stands on the site of an earlier church built in 1788. The building continues to be used as an ecclesiastical building.
