Description
The Bridge of Avon is a two-arch rubble bridge dating from 1754, with partial reconstruction in 1829. The bridge is higher on the western bank than the eastern bank. It features unequal stone arch rings, with the larger, western arch spanning the main stream. Triangular cut-waters are present. The original parapet was removed to allow for a temporary girder bridge. Some repairs have been made using breeze blocks. The bridge was damaged around 1976. A plaque near Tomintoul, at the Well of Lecht, commemorates the construction of the road in 1754, built "from here to Spey by the 33rd Reg," which crosses the bridge. A smaller arch was destroyed in the 1829 floods. References include Thomas Dick Lauder’s AN ACCOUNT OF THE GREAT FLOODS OF AUGUST 1829 (1830), Victor Gaffney’s TOMINTOUL ITS GLENS AND ITS PEOPLE (1970), and John Hume’s THE INDUSTRIAL ARCHAEOLOGY OF SCOTLAND (1977).
