Description
Tomintoul Parish Church, built in 1826, is an ecclesiastical building situated on Main Street, Tomintoul, with a burial ground to the rear. The church was substantially altered and re-fronted in 1900 by John Robertson of Inverness. It is constructed of coursed rubble with tooled dressings, and rubble flanks and rear. The street frontage features four buttressed bays and a gabled projecting porch rising the full height on the southwest side, including a pointed doorway in the re-entrant angle. Pinnacled buttresses mark the angles, and the church has 1900 tracery and glazing in all its windows. A stumpy, birdcage-style belfry from the original 1826 construction sits at the apex of the north gable, under a Tomintoul slate roof.
The interior was re-cast and re-modelled in an ornate Gothic style. Notable features include a carved oak communion table, reredos, and pulpit. There is some stained glass within the church, with work by Messrs Garvie of Aberdeen. The burial ground is enclosed by high rubble walls. The quoad sacra parish of Tomintoul was formed in 1833.
