Description

The Caledonian Bank, located at 1 High Street and 1 The Square in Grantown-On-Spey, was designed by Matthews and Laurie between 1865 and 1867. This two-storey building consists of two symmetrical three-bay blocks arranged at right angles to one another. It is constructed from squared tooled grey granite, featuring polished pale granite ashlar dressings and margins, while the rear is harled with ashlar margins.

The front facing High Street presents a symmetrical three-bay dwelling that adjoins the gable end of the banking house. It has a central door framed by a pilastered corniced doorpiece, with tripartite and bipartite windows in the outer bays that align with similar windows in the slightly advanced gable of the adjoining bank. On The Square side, the bank has a central door with a matching doorpiece and flanking bipartite windows. All windows have blocked cills and feature two-pane glazing. The building displays long and short quoins at the corners, and a bandcourse encircles the range, connecting the doorpiece cornices. Granite brackets support the eaves cornice, and there are end, rear, and ridge stacks, including one surviving flue battery with six tall cans topped with flared anthemion-decorated caps. The roof is piended and covered with slate. The rear of the dwelling includes stair windows at the center.
