Description
Loinherry in Corgarff is a single-storey and attic cottage, possibly dating from 1842 or earlier. It has a rectangular plan and features three bays, showcasing a rare retention of much of its original interior. The exterior is constructed from roughly squared and snecked rubble, with large squared quoins.
The symmetrical entrance is located on the southeast side and includes a typical timber boarded lean-to porch at the center, a boarded timber door, and a two-part letterbox fanlight. Flanking windows and piended dormers enhance the façade. The rear elevation has three asymmetrical tiny window openings.
The cottage features timber sash and case windows with a 4-pane glazing pattern, a roof covered with grey slates, and original cast iron rooflights. The chimneys are made of coped ashlar with thackstanes and polygonal cans, and the skews are also ashlar-coped.
Inside, the cottage is a good example of a typical Donside layout. The ground floor consists of two low-ceilinged rooms, with the kitchen on the west side, which is timber lined, including the ceiling. It has a granite hearth, a working swey, and a timber mantel shelf supported on outer corbels. The hearth contains later firebricks stamped 'DYKEHEAD BONNYBRIDGE'. A timber dividing wall at the center has a plenishing breast, which indicates the position of former box beds, and retains some panelled screen doors. The sitting room on the east side has a similar plenishing breast opening and a granite fire surround with a moulded timber mantel shelf. There is a timber stair running east-west, facing the plenishing breast, leading to small attic bedrooms that are all timber lined. A wall recess behind the front door likely served for milk or water storage.
