Description
Ballantruan is a farmhouse dating from the mid-to-later 18th century. It is a 2-storey, 3-bay wide building with a single-storey, 2-bay wing projecting from the north-east gable. The farmhouse is built of harled rubble. A wide central entrance features a double-leaf panelled door. Windows have 12 panes, except for the smaller first-floor windows which have 9 panes. A small stair window is located on the centre of the rear elevation. The building has end stacks and a roof covered in Tomintoul slate.
The interior of the right-hand ground floor room retains some panelling. The left-hand ground floor room features extensive panelling, which obscures former box-beds. There are also two panelled cupboards set at an angle and well-finished ceiling joists. Raised and fielded panelled doors are found throughout the building. The survival of these good panelled interiors is particularly notable.
Victor Gaffney’s 1970 book, Tominoul, Its Glens and Its People, mentions Ballantruan on page 48. The property is located within the Cairngorms National Park.
