Description

St. Mary's Church and Old Parish Church in Clova was built in 1855. It is a single-storey, four-bay church featuring a gabled design with a simple bellcote at the gable head, a later timber porch, and rectangular windows that have latticed glazing. The principal elevations are constructed from roughly squared granite bonded in Aberdeen style, while granite rubble is used elsewhere. The church has stugged red sandstone ashlar dressings, with long and short quoins and window margins, as well as projecting window cills.

The south elevation, which is the principal one, has four windows. The west gable has a slated timber-boarded porch that projects out, and there is a simple stone birdcage bellcote at the apex of the gable. The east elevation has a single window in the center and a cross finial at the gable apex, while the north elevation is unfenestrated. The windows have fixed, lattice-glazed lights, and the skews are ashlar-coped. The roof is covered with graded Scottish slate and has metal flashings.

Inside, the church features timber-boarded panelling up to the dado level and a stained glass window at the east end. The churchyard is enclosed by a random rubble boundary wall with an iron gate. The gravestones are predominantly from the 19th century, with some well-carved but weathered gravestones dating back to the 18th century.
