Signal Box, Kippen Station

This signal box, built in 1893 by the North British Railway Company, is a two-storey, rectangular building. A brick base supports a raised floor, with six large windows with six panes each facing south. There are three similar windows on the east and west returns, all set in timber frames. The rear wall is also brick, with returns to the east and west. The gables are timber-boarded and the roof is slate. The building retains fragmentary remains of ornate cast-iron brackets that once supported a timber walkway or cill shelf below the operating room.

The interior features timber panelling on the upper floor, and includes an intact fireplace. The original signalling machinery has been removed. Signal boxes are a distinctive, increasingly rare building type which contribute to Scotland's industrial heritage.

This signal box is a non-standard design by the North British Railway Company. It has been out of use since 1959 and retains remnants of an ornate cast-iron bracket around the signal cabin. The signal box is situated in the garden of the former station master’s house.
