88 Convington Road

This is an early 19th century row of seven single-storey cottages situated on Covington Road, Scotland. The cottages are each three or four bays wide and have corrugated iron roofs, although numbers 82 and 86 retain reed-thatch roofs. They are constructed from random rubble with sandstone ashlar window surrounds. Most front doors are timber-boarded, and the windows are timber sash and case with four panes of glass. Short stone chimney stacks are topped with clay cans.

The row is unusually long and remains largely unaltered. The corrugated iron roofs contribute to a distinctive and picturesque appearance. Remarkably, there are no later rooflights or dormers on either the front or rear elevations, and few rear extensions have been added since the early 20th century. Originally, all the cottages would have had thatched roofs, with the thatch on number 86 having been replaced in the early 1990s.

The survival of thatched buildings is rare in Scotland; a 2016 survey by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings found only about 200 remaining, primarily in small rural communities. These buildings are typically constructed using distinctive local materials and building methods, providing valuable insight into traditional skills and earlier ways of life.

The building was upgraded to Grade B in 1989, and the listing record was revised in 2019 as part of a review of thatched buildings.

The cottages appear on the first edition Ordnance Survey map, dating from around 1864.
