84 Covington Road

This is an early 19th-century row of seven single-storey cottages, located on Covington Road in the Newtown of Covington, Scotland. The cottages are each three or four bays wide and have corrugated iron roofs, with Nos. 82 and 86 retaining reed-thatch roofs. The construction is random rubble with sandstone ashlar window margins. The cottages feature predominantly timber-boarded front doors and timber sash and case windows with four panes of glass. Short stone chimney stacks terminate in clay cans.

This is an unusually long and unaltered row of traditional cottages. The corrugated iron roofs contribute to a striking and picturesque appearance. The lack of later rooflights and dormers on the front and rear elevations, and the limited number of rear extensions added since the early 20th century, are notable features. Originally, all the cottages would have been thatched, and the thatch on No. 86 was replaced in the early 1990s.

The row is significant as it is among only approximately 200 surviving traditional buildings with a thatched roof in Scotland, most of which are found in small rural communities. Surviving thatched buildings demonstrate distinctive local and regional building methods and materials, and are important for understanding traditional skills and earlier ways of life.

The building was initially graded as a Category C listed building, but was upgraded to Category B in 1989. The listing record was revised in 2019 as part of a review of thatched buildings.

The cottages appear on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map dating from around 1864.
