Description
This is an earlier 19th-century row of seven single-storey cottages located on Covington Road in the Newtown of Covington. The cottages are each three or four bays wide and have corrugated iron roofs, although numbers 82 and 86 retain reed-thatch roofs. The walls are constructed from random rubble with sandstone ashlar window surrounds. The front doors are predominantly timber-boarded, and the windows are timber sash and case windows with four panes of glass. Short stone chimney stacks with clay cans are also present.
The row is notable as an unusually long and unaltered example of traditional cottages. The corrugated-iron roofs contribute to a distinctive and picturesque appearance. The lack of later rooflights or dormers on both the front and rear elevations is remarkable, and very few rear extensions have been added since the early 20th century. Originally, all cottages would have had thatched roofs; the thatch on number 86 was replaced in the early 1990s.
As part of a relatively small number of traditional buildings with a surviving thatched roof in Scotland, these cottages are historically significant. A 2016 survey by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings identified around 200 such buildings, primarily found in small rural communities. These buildings demonstrate traditional building methods and materials, offering valuable insights into earlier ways of life and local building skills.
The row appears on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map dating from around 1864. The building was initially given a lower listing category (C) in 1989, which was subsequently upgraded to a Grade B listing in 1989 as part of a review of thatched buildings.
