Description
This is an earlier 19th-century row of seven single-story cottages located on Covington Road. The cottages are each three or four bays wide and have corrugated iron roofs, with Numbers 82 and 86 retaining reed-thatch roofs. The walls are constructed from random rubble with sandstone ashlar window margins. The cottages feature timber-boarded front doors and four-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Short stone chimney stacks are topped with clay cans.
The row is notably long and remains largely unaltered. The corrugated iron roofs contribute to a distinctive, picturesque appearance. The absence of later rooflights or dormers on both the front and rear elevations is remarkable, and very few rear extensions have been added since the early 20th century. Originally, all the cottages would have had thatched roofs; the thatch on Number 86 was replaced in the early 1990s.
The survival of a thatched roof in this building is significant. A 2016 survey by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) identified approximately 200 such buildings in Scotland, typically located in small rural communities and demonstrating distinctive local building methods and materials. These buildings are important for understanding traditional skills and earlier ways of life.
The building was raised to Grade B in 1989 and underwent a listing review in 2019 as part of the Thatched Buildings Listing Review 2017-19. The cottages are depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of around 1864.
