Description

The boundary wall at Burnhouse, located at 51 Neilsland Road, is attributed to architect William Leiper and dates from around 1876, with a 20th-century addition to the northeast. This single-storey, four-bay estate cottage has a roughly rectangular plan and features crow-stepped gables topped with finials and bipartite windows. It is constructed from squared, stugged orange sandstone, accented with polished ashlar dressings. The front elevation includes a base course, a moulded eaves cornice, and moulded skew putts. The front windows and door have roll-moulded margins, while the rear windows have chamfered margins, with relieving arches above the front windows.

On the southeast (principal) elevation, there is a central timber-panelled front door sheltered by a stone slab canopy supported on moulded brackets, accessed by two tiled steps. To the left of the door is a bipartite window, and above it is a crow-stepped dormer-head with a half-moon finial and a monogram. The gable to the right is slightly advanced and features a paired window, a spiky ball-finial at the gablehead, and the monogram JW in a square panel above the window. There is a piend-roofed 20th-century addition on the outer right, which also has a bipartite window.

The southwest (road) elevation has a slightly advanced gable with a thistle finial and a blind slit window, along with a stone bollard in the re-entrant angle and a truncated stack above. The northwest (rear) elevation features two gables flanking a central bay, with irregular fenestration that includes an oval window on the right gable, and a 20th-century addition on the outer left. The windows are fitted with plate glass in timber sash and case frames.
