Description
68 Wellhall Road is a cemetery lodge designed by J B Brodie and dated 1904. This single-storey building features a cross-plan in a Baronial style, constructed from stugged grey sandstone coursers with ashlar dressings and an artificial slate roof, although the original slates remain on the tower. The lodge has a base course and wallhead course, with single, tripartite, and canted windows that have chamfered jambs, though the glazing is modern and not in keeping with the original character. The crowstepped gables and corniced stacks add to its distinctive appearance, along with decorative cast-iron rainwater goods.
The front elevation has a gable that is advanced to the center, featuring a tripartite window with a hoodmould and a date panel. To the right, there is a round entrance tower at the re-entrant angle, which includes a segmental-headed moulded doorcase with a blank heraldic panel above, sidelights, and a small blocked window with a hoodmould. The tower is topped with a conical roof, partly covered in fishscale slates and finished with a weathervane finial. A canted window is located on the right return gable, while a bay to the left is recessed and has a single window. The left return gable is blank. The rear elevation features various windows, with a gable advanced to the center and a modern addition at the right re-entrant angle.
The interior has not been seen.
The lodge is accompanied by gatepiers, gates, and adjoining walls. There are two massive channelled ashlar gatepiers topped with ball-finialled, modillioned, and corniced caps. The mid-20th century wrought-iron gates are set within a segmental-arched roll-moulded opening that features the original cast-iron gate. The adjoining walls are made of saddleback-coped stugged coursers.
Additionally, there is a waiting room that is a single storey with a flat roof, built in the earlier 20th century. This room is adjacent to the left gatepier and has a front wall constructed from the quadrant. It features stugged coursers and a parapet, with metal windows. The front has three horizontal windows, and the rear has a keystoned and quoined doorcase with a horizontal canopy and three windows.
