Description
Mecca Bingo, formerly the Vogue Cinema, is an Art Deco building designed by John McKissack & Son and constructed between 1935 and 1936. The structure features a brick auditorium with a pitched roof, and it is fronted by a white faience-clad entrance façade that steps up towards the center. On either side of the main entrance, there are small shops. The building is constructed with a brick on a steel or reinforced concrete frame, showcasing a white tiled frontage.
The principal elevation includes four two-leaf doors set in a recessed entrance beneath a curved canopy. The entrance is adorned with a moulded rectangular Art Deco pediment, which has a bracketed cornice and a stepped central finial, with truncated fluted columns on either side. The auditorium itself is roughly rectangular with a tapered rear end.
Inside, there is an imperial staircase at the back of the entrance foyer, featuring Art Deco balusters and tapered columns on either side. The auditorium has a curved ceiling with a large 'O' shape in a cusped recess at its center. The stage is flanked by columns set in a curved proscenium, and there is a concave curved balcony with Art Deco mouldings. The building also includes staircases leading to the balcony and projection room, as well as several pairs of original two-leaf swing doors.
