Description
The Ingle is a late 19th century villa designed in the style of William Leiper, situated within a large landscaped garden in Rutherglen, Glasgow. The building is two storeys high and features predominantly Gothic detailing. Notable architectural elements include an unusually elaborate sculptured stone porch or loggia on the right flank, a gabled and barge-boarded full-height projecting square bay alongside, and a conical-roofed turreted bay on the left. The exterior is constructed of stugged ashlar with polished dressings, and it includes mullioned and transomed windows, with cusped-headed lights at the ground level, some of which have small leaded panes. Additionally, there are leaded glass panels created by Daniel Cottier. The roof is broad-eaved and steep-pitched, covered with slate and adorned with ridging tiles and finials, along with end stacks.
The main gateway features curved quadrants and inner piers topped with pedimented caps and ball finials, along with decorative iron gates and railings.
At the rear of the property, there is a free-standing coach-house or stable block. The main range has a pyramid roof with a dormer and a single stack, while a flat-roofed two-bay coach-house or motor house range may not be original. The forecourt is enclosed by a plain rendered wall with gatepiers. There is also a small square timber structure with a slate roof.
A summerhouse located to the south may also date back to the 19th century.
