121 Lanark Road, Carstairs

This is a small, mid-19th century villa, originally situated at 121 Lanark Road, Carstairs Village. Built in the Tudor style, it is a three-bay design with a single storey and attic. The front is faced with stugged sandstone ashlar, contrasted by polished ashlar dressings. The side and rear elevations are of coursed rubble construction. The central bay slightly projects, topped by a coped gablet with a pointed finial. The front doorway features lugged, bolection moulding and a fanlight with geometric glazing. An attic window above the central bay has chamfered ingoes and cill, along with a hoodmould. Flanking the central bay are larger windows with eight-pane sash and case glazing and similarly treated details. A base course runs along the front. The gable chimneys have distinctive twin diamond stacks with moulded copes. The roof is now pantiled, though it is a more modern replacement. A small, much-altered single-storey range of offices extends to the east. It is believed that this villa served as the factor's house for Carstairs House.
