Description
53-55 Newmarket Street in Ayr is an early 19th century, two-storey, three-bay tenement building that features shops on the ground floor. The exterior is finished in painted render, with a cornice above the shopfronts and strip quoin detailing on the outer left side. The first-floor windows have painted margins.
On the northeast elevation, there is a central doorpiece from the later 19th century, which includes a segmental pediment and lugged architrave, along with nailhead spandrels beneath the hoodmould. The door is made of timber and has a letterbox fanlight above it. Flanking the entrance are shops on the ground floor, with a modern aluminium glazed door to the right of the left shop and a shop window to the left. The right shop features a glazed modern door to the left and a shop window to the right. The first floor has regular fenestration.
The first-floor windows are timber sash and case with plate glass, and the outer left window has a louvred upper sash. The roof is covered in grey slate and includes rooflights, stone skews, and coped stacks, with the outer right stack being stepped and featuring polygonal cans.
The interiors were not seen in 1998.
