Description

30-30A South Beach in Troon is a classical house dating from around 1840, with internal changes made around 1975. The building is symmetrical, featuring two storeys and a basement, with three bays. The central section is recessed and has a single storey and basement, while a two-bay wing is located to the outer left. To the right, there is an L-plan wing that is also a single storey and basement, along with a two-bay addition that is recessed to the outer right, which serves as the entrance for No 30A.

The house is constructed from cream rubble sandstone, with polished ashlar dressings that are lightly droved. The flanking wings are made of tooled sandstone, with parts rendered and whitewashed harl at the rear. The facing of No 30A is made from coursed blocks. Notable features include a raised band course at the principal floor, a lintel course beneath the corniced eaves, and a polished blocking course. The building has raised long and short quoins and surrounds to the openings, with narrow strip quoins at the rear, and a columned doorcase.

On the northeast elevation facing South Beach, there are steps leading to a part-glazed timber panelled door at the centre for No 30, supported by detached Roman Doric columns that hold up the corniced doorcase. A single window is aligned above at the first floor. The flanking bays are regularly fenestrated on both floors, while the wings on the left and right each have single windows. The single storey addition on the outer right includes a single window and a flanking door for entrance No 30A.

The southwest elevation facing the Esplanade features three-light canted windows in the projecting central bay at all floors. An exterior stair leads to the ground floor entrance in the re-entrant angle to the right. The remaining bays to the right are irregularly fenestrated on both floors, with boarded timber doors leading to a segmental arched carriage entrance at the basement. The bays to the left are regularly fenestrated.

The building predominantly has 2-pane timber sash and case glazing, although there is some replacement glazing in No 30A and predominantly replacement glazing in the flanking wings. The roofs are covered with graded grey slate and have replacement rainwater goods. Corniced wallhead stacks are located on the northwest and southeast, with octagonal and circular cans, and a large corniced stack is centred above the main block, featuring 11 circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1997. The property is enclosed by low coped rubble walls along South Beach and a taller random rubble wall at the rear.
