Description
Tamale is a later 19th century, two-storey, four-bay paired villa located on a corner site at 9 Racecourse Road in Ayr. The building features coursed sandstone with slightly raised quoins, a base course, a central dividing string course, an eaves course with timber eaves, a cornice, and a blocking course. The first-floor canted windows have aprons.
On the northwest (entrance) elevation, there are two segmental-arched entrances at the ground floor, with the entrance to the right now converted to a single window. The entrance has a timber door and a letterbox fanlight, with two single windows aligned above on the first floor. A continuous circular-pattern wrought iron balcony with heavy consoled supports spans the width. Flanking canted bays are present at both the ground and first floors.
The southwest (Park Circus) elevation is three bays wide and features an off-centre segmental-arched doorpiece with a timber door and letterbox fanlight, along with a single window aligned above on the first floor. It also has a circular-pattern wrought iron balcony with heavy consoled supports. The canted bay to the right and the single window bay to the left have regular fenestration, and there are square plaques on the inner left at both the ground and first floors.
The southeast elevation has gabled single-storey additions that advance to the right at the ground floor, with regular fenestration to the remaining bays. The northeast elevation was not seen in 1999.
The villa has plate glass timber sash and case windows, a slate roof with iron finials, pitch corniced stacks, and corniced and circular cans. It also features cast-iron rainwater goods.
The property includes painted gatepiers at No 9, stone gatepiers at No 1, and iron gatepiers and gates at the vehicular entrance to No 1. There is a stepped, coped rubble boundary wall surrounding the property.
