Description

This is a two-story lodge, built between 1898 and 1900 in the Old English style by architect William Leiper. It is located at 9 Craigend Road, Troon, and is laid out in an L-shape, with an entrance facing east, and a single-story lean-to addition to the west. A single-story garage block is situated to the northeast.

The lodge is constructed primarily of rake-jointed, tooled red sandstone at ground level, with polished red sandstone for the dressings. The first floor is half-timbered with harl, and red tile infills are present in the gableheads. A raised base course is visible, with a timber string course delineating the floors. The eaves overhang and feature timber brackets, complemented by timber bargeboards. Polished quoins and long and short surrounds frame the chamfered, basket-arched ground floor openings, which have sandstone mullions and chamfered cills.

The east-facing elevation has a red tile roof that sweeps down to a projecting central bay. This bay contains a two-leaf boarded timber door on the right and a curved bracket supported by a sandstone corbel on the left. A bipartite window is set within a slightly recessed, gabled bay to the outer right, and a three-light oriel window, supported by curved brackets, is centred in the apex of the gable. A blind bay is recessed to the outer left.

The south-facing side elevation features a single, gabled bay with a projecting three-light window at ground level. A four-light canted oriel window, also supported by curved brackets, sits above. Curved brackets extend to the outer left and right, supporting the overhanging first floor. A single window is set within the lean-to addition recessed to the outer left. The north-facing side elevation shows corbelled detailing to the central wallhead stack, with a single window at ground level in the bay to the outer left, and two further single windows to the right.

The west-facing (rear) elevation has a boarded timber door and a single window within the lean-to addition to the left of the centre; bipartite dormers are positioned above. Blind bays are recessed to the right.

The windows are a mix of four-pane upper, plate glass lower sash and case, and 12-pane timber sash and case. First-floor windows use six-pane timber casement glazing. A single rooflight is above the entrance. The roof is red tiled, with red clay ridge tiles, and features cast-iron rainwater goods. Decorative coping is present on the red sandstone apex and wallhead stacks, with single shoulders on the west side, and circular terracotta cans.

The interior of the lodge was not inspected in 1997.

The site is enclosed by a low, coped red sandstone wall. Coursed red sandstone square-plan piers mark the boundaries on Craigend Road and Bentinck Drive. Coursed, octagonal-plan gatepiers flank the vehicular entrance. These piers have dentil detail beneath tiered, tapering caps, and are flanked by replacement boarded timber gates.
