Description
Belhaven is an early 20th century villa with later additions and alterations, located at 3 Craigend Road in Troon. The building is asymmetrical, featuring two storeys and four bays arranged in a 3-1 grouping, with a single-storey porch positioned in the re-entrant angle to the right. There is a two-storey wing that is recessed to the outer right, and a large single-storey L-plan addition at the rear. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked stugged red sandstone, with polished sandstone dressings. It has a bull-faced rubble plinth, an architraved string course, and an architraved cill course at the first floor, along with corniced eaves. The openings have chamfered surrounds and cills, with sandstone mullions and transoms.
On the south (front) elevation, the main three bays feature single windows centered at both the ground and first floors. The outer left bay has 4-light canted windows on both floors, while the bay to the right has 3-light bowed windows on both floors. The single-storey porch is attached to the right, with a single window at the first floor above in the recessed bay. The two-storey wing to the outer right has a 3-light canted oriel with a parapet that breaks the eaves, along with a small window at the ground level.
The east (entrance) elevation includes a bracketed, round-arched timber canopy centered in the porch to the outer left, with small-pane surrounding lights. The vestibule entrance is recessed and features a round-arched door surround with raised blocks and a keystone, along with concave reveals and a two-leaf timber panelled door. There are tripartite windows at both floors in the bay to the right, with single openings at the ground level in the remaining bays to the right and a single window at the first floor. The two-storey wing advanced to the outer right has irregular fenestration.
The villa predominantly features 2-pane timber sash and case glazing, with small-pane timber casements in the porch. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods. The building has corniced sandstone apex and wallhead stacks, with a ridge stack to the south and circular cans.
The interior has been adapted for use as a nursing home. Surrounding the property is a boundary wall made of squared and snecked bull-faced rubble, topped with polished coping. The site is enclosed with decorative cast-iron railings, taller bull-faced piers that have lamps on top, and cast-iron gates.
