Description

This is a group of buildings at 139, 141, 143, and 145 Bentinck Drive, Troon, built in 1901-02 and later subdivided during the 20th century. The design is asymmetrical, comprising a single-storey-and-attic section and a two-storey element, executed in an Old English style. Included is a former stable block with an engaged, conical-capped tower offset to the left of the centre.

The building is constructed primarily of rake-jointed, tooled red sandstone at ground level, with polished sandstone dressings, and half-timbering with harl on the first floor. A timber string course separates the floors, and the eaves overhang, supported by bracketed timber. Red tile pitched roofs feature timber bargeboards to the gableheads. Polished quoins are present, along with long and short surrounds to the chamfered ground floor openings, and sandstone mullions. A columnar verandah is located at the rear.

The west-facing elevation (Bentinck Drive) features a two-light window at ground level, with a three-light window breaking the eaves beneath a gablehead above. A boarded timber door is found at ground level in the penultimate bay on the right (No. 141), while a bipartite window is set in the outer right bay. A cat-slide dormer is aligned above. The conical-capped tower has a single window at ground level to the southwest and a timber door to the northwest (No. 139), and a single window at the first floor. A five-light window is at ground level in the outer left bay, with a three-light window breaking the eaves above.

The south-facing elevation incorporates advanced columns supporting a red tile roof that slopes down from the rear verandah. A modern glazing row is centrally positioned, flanked by single doors (No. 143). A single window is placed in the re-entrant angle to the outer left, with regularly-disposed three- and two-light gableheaded dormers above. A two-storey, single-bay section is on the outer right, featuring a single window at ground level and a three-light window at the first floor. A four-light glazing row is at the first floor of a projecting, gabled wing on the outer left.

The rear (east) elevation has a stair giving access to the first floor within an advanced, gabled wing on the outer right (No. 145). Windows are irregularly disposed at ground level, with a single window on the first floor. A timber bracket supports an oversailing gable. A recessed verandah is located to the left, alongside a five-light glazing row in a recessed wing, with a three-light gableheaded dormer offset to the right.

The majority of the glazing has been replaced, although some small-pane timber casements remain at the first floor. The red tile roof has a red clay ridge, and the engaged tower is capped conically, with a ball finial. Cast-iron rainwater goods are in place. The ridge stacks are of coped red sandstone with circular terracotta cans.

The interiors were not inspected in 1997.

A low coped sandstone boundary wall runs along Bentinck Drive, with timber fencing supported by timber piers adorned with ball finials. A cobbled approach leads to square-plan red sandstone piers flanking a vehicular entrance, with dentilled, chamfered caps; the gates have been removed.
