Description

Windhouse is a house dating from around 1800, with an extension added around 1820. It is situated on a sloping site on Law Lane. The original structure is a symmetrical, two-storey and attic, three-bay house. There is a two-storey, three-bay wing projecting from the centre of the rear (north) elevation, creating a T-shaped plan, with a 20th-century lean-to addition filling in the northeast corner. The walls are built of harl-pointed and cement-rendered rubble, with ashlar dressings that have a stugged and droved finish.

The south (Law Lane) elevation has a cement-rendered infill around the door in the centre bay, with regular window placement in the flanking bays and at the first floor. The west (principal) elevation features the gable end of the original house projecting at the right, with a single window at ground level. To the left, a recessed two-storey, three-bay elevation of the later wing includes a six-panel entrance door with a plate glass fanlight on the first (principal) floor, accessed by stone steps with modern steel railings, and regular window placement in the bays to the left.

The east (Pirate Lane) elevation has the two-bay gable end of the original house projecting at the left, with regular window placement on both ground and first floors, and square windows in the gablehead. The later wing is recessed to the right, with a lean-to filling in the re-entrant angle.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 12 panes on the west elevation of the wing, plate glass to other openings, modern glazing at ground level on the south elevation, and in the attic. The roof is covered with purple slate and asbestos tiles, with stugged ashlar and rubble apex stacks to the gables, which are coped and have circular cans. The skew copes are cement-rendered and ashlar.

Inside, a timber staircase has turned spindles. The drawing room on the first floor of the wing has a symmetrical arrangement on the north wall, featuring a classical timber chimney piece flanked by windows; six-panel doors along the south wall (with a dummy door on the left); two windows in the west wall; all are architraved and have panelled shutters.

Retaining and boundary walls are constructed of random rubble with ashlar copes. A random rubble retaining wall with an ashlar cope encloses a flagged area along the west elevation. Boundary walls extend north, east, south, and west. The raised wallhead on the south (Law Lane) side incorporates a margined gateway adjacent to the house, with a vertically-boarded timber gate featuring slatted upper sections. A vertically-boarded timber door is located adjacent to the wing on the east wall.

Outbuildings include a two-storey gabled rubble structure with a purple-grey slate roof on Hangcliff Lane, and a lean-to outbuilding with a vertically-boarded timber door in the yard adjacent to the north gable of the later wing.
