Kirkabister, Yell

Kirkabister in Yell is a rectangular sheep enclosure built in the later 19th century. It features harl-pointed rubble walls with stugged sandstone dressings and a stone-slabbed wallhead that is raised at the corners.

The south elevation is symmetrical, with a full-height entrance at the center that breaks the elevation, flanked by blank walls. The west elevation is nearly symmetrical, with a single low doorway to the left. The north elevation is blank. The east elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a single low doorway to the right, while the south wall is advanced at the outer left, accompanied by a slated rubble lean-to in the re-entrant angle.

Inside, the main enclosure is divided by a rubble wall running north to south, creating two sub-enclosures. The east sub-enclosure is further divided at the center by another wall running east to west. The west sub-enclosure contains two free-standing breeding enclosures with gates on the east side. The roof is a mono pitch covered with purple grey slate and supported by regularly spaced timber columns resting on stone pads, although the roofs on the southwest and north sides are in a ruinous condition.
