Description

12A Currie Street in Duns is an early 19th century, two-storey, three-bay house that has undergone later alterations. It is constructed from cream sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and is adjoined to the rear of No 11.

The south elevation features four bays, with the left bay having windows on both floors. The three right bays are symmetrical, highlighted by a projecting piend-roofed centre bay. This centre bay includes a Tuscan Doric pilastered doorpiece with a dentilled cornice, a modern panelled door, and a decorative multi-pane fanlight above. There is a window on the first floor, and the eaves are moulded. The flanking bays contain Venetian windows at ground level, while the left bay has a window and the right bay features a bipartite window that is slightly displaced to the right on the first floor.

The north elevation consists of five irregular bays. At the centre, there is an irregular harled lean-to porch with a door on the return and another door to the left. To the left, there is a single-storey link to a piend-roofed former stable and hay-loft.

The stable and hay-loft are built of rubble and feature a boarded door flanked by small windows at ground level, with a hayloft window positioned just under the eaves to the left. The roof is piended and includes various cast-iron skylights and a ventilator strip on the south side.

The building has timber sash and case windows, with 12-pane windows on the south side and plate glass on the north side. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are brick stacks at the apex, with ashlar coped skews.

Additionally, there are a pair of corniced ashlar gatepiers at the entrance to Currie Street.
