Description
The Public Library on Bowmont Street in Kelso was designed by Peddie & Washington Browne and built between 1905 and 1906 in the Scottish Renaissance style. This single-storey building features an attic and has a three-bay entrance located in the left-hand bay. The entrance includes a pilastered doorway topped with a sculptured panel. At the ground level, there are large four-light windows with mullions and transoms, while the dormers at the wallhead are two-light, also with mullions and transoms, and feature curvilinear gablets. The building has straight skews and rectangular corniced end stacks, topped with a slated roof. The forecourt is enclosed by a dwarf wall, which has had its railings removed, and includes a pair of square-plan, panelled sandstone pillars with cornices and wrought iron finials.
