Description

20 Market Place in Selkirk is a late 19th century, two-storey building with an attic and later additions and alterations. It features a two-bay terraced design with shop space on the ground floor, positioned slightly forward from the northwest elevation of No 4 High Street to the northeast. The ground floor is finished in painted ashlar, which may be partly rendered, while the upper section is constructed from bull-faced sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. The rear is made of whinstone rubble with sandstone dressings. The building has a modern broad fascia and a cornice above, with cills on the first-floor windows, flush quoins, and tails to the windows, as well as an eaves course.

On the northwest elevation facing Market Place, there is a large fixed-pane panoramic window on the ground floor within a wider gabled bay, a bipartite window on the first floor, and a window in the gablehead above, flanked by shield plaques. A pend entrance is located at the ground level on the narrow right side, with a window above it on the first floor.

The northeast elevation features a modern glazed shop door at ground level, while the first floor above is blank. The southeast elevation has extensive additions that are now partly truncated due to demolition in 1996.

The building has plate glass timber sash and case windows and a slate roof with a gabled dormer on the outer right of the northeast elevation, next to a sandstone coped wallhead stack. There is also a further brick coped wallhead stack on the northeast side. The interior was not seen in 1996.
