Description
11 and 14 Market Place in Selkirk is a later 19th century, two-storey, four-bay building that is part of a terrace, arranged in two groups of two. The exterior features stugged ashlar with polished ashlar dressings on the first floor, while the ground floor is painted. The rear is constructed of whinstone rubble with droved ashlar dressings, and there are various additions to the rear of No 11, some of which are pebbledashed. The building has a base course, a cornice between the ground and first floor, deep eaves, and stop-chamfered arrises.
On the southeast elevation facing the Market Place, the right two bays are slightly taller and advanced from the line of the left two bays. Each bay on the first floor of both groups has windows, with the narrower group on the right having a closer disposition. In the centre of the right group, there is a deep-set glazed shop door flanked by windows. The advanced two-bay group has a rounded corner, featuring a two-leaf boarded door flanked by a window on the left and a round-arched pend entrance on the right.
The northwest elevation includes two-storey and single-storey additions projecting from the rear of No 11. The first floor of No 11 has plate glass timber sash and case windows, while No 12 has modern glazing on the first floor. Each ground floor has two-pane fixed windows. The roofs are pitched and covered with slate, each featuring a skylight and ashlar coped skews. There is a piended canted dormer at the centre of No 12 and two dormers on No 11, with ashlar coped mutual stacks.
The interior was not seen in 1995.
