Description
18 Market Place in Selkirk is a later 19th-century, three-storey, three-bay tenement that forms part of a terrace. The building features a shop at the ground level and is set slightly forward from the adjacent structure. The second storey extends beyond the eaves. The ground floor is finished in painted polished ashlar, while the upper levels are mostly rendered painted stugged ashlar with ashlar dressings. Architectural details include a base course, a cornice between the ground and first floors, strip pilasters, an eaves course, and stop-chamfered arrises.
On the southeast elevation facing Market Place, the ground floor has an irregular layout with a deep-set door located to the right of center, flanked by windows. To the outer left, there is a panelled door with a rectangular plate glass fanlight above, set in a shoulder-arched doorway. The first floor features a bipartite window in the center with a hoodmould, along with hoodmoulded windows in each of the flanking bays. The second floor has bipartite windows in the outer bays that break the eaves and are set within gabled dormerheads topped with ashlar finials.
The northeast return elevation has a window on each floor. The northwest elevation was not visible in 1995. The building has modern glazing on the first and second floors, with plate glass fixed-pane windows at the ground level. The roof is slate, with a platformed apex and ashlar coped mutual stacks. The interior was not seen in 1995.
