Description
The Statue of Sir Walter Scott, located in the Market Place of Selkirk, was designed by Alexander Handyside Ritchie in 1839, with later alterations made by Dick Peddie and Walker Todd in 1932, which included a new base. The statue features a square-plan base and a two-stage pedestal, with the second stage having a battered design adorned with leaf and dart motifs and a cornice. The statue itself is a full-height figure, possibly made of painted ashlar.
On the northwest elevation at the base, there is a plaque commemorating the centenary of Sir Walter Scott from 1832 to 1932, which was unveiled by the Duke of Buccleuch. The first stage of the pedestal is carved with the original commemoration from when the statue was erected. The second stage features a panel with a winged lute and the word "Waverley" carved into a ribbon. The statue depicts Scott robed as a Sheriff in a contraposto stance, holding a stick.
The northeast elevation of the first stage includes a Selkirk motif, while both stages of the southeast elevation are decorated with wreaths. The southwest elevation features a heraldic emblem of Scott on the first stage and a wreath above on the second stage.
