Description
This building, located at 6 and 8 High Street in Selkirk, dates from the mid 19th century and has undergone later additions and alterations. It is a two-storey, three-bay terraced tenement with a shop on the ground floor. The exterior is constructed of squared and coursed whinstone, featuring painted polished ashlar dressings and droved ashlar tails, while the northeast side is finished in whinstone rubble. Notable architectural details include a base course, an eaves course, long and short quoins, and slightly raised margins around the openings.
On the northwest elevation facing High Street, there is a modern glazed door with a letterbox and a plate glass fanlight above it. A window is located on the first floor directly above the door. The shop window on the ground floor of the right bay has been enlarged, with a corresponding window on the first floor above. The left bay features a window on both the ground and first floors.
The first-floor windows have modern glazing, while the ground floor has plate glass fixed-pane windows. The building is topped with a slate roof that includes a modern skylight on the outer right and vents. There is a modern brick coped stack on the northeast side and a shared ashlar coped stack on the southwest.
The interior has not been fully seen since 1996, but it is noted that the shop interior has been significantly altered.
