Description

The Old Coach House, located at Bankhouse, is an 18th-century, two-storey, three-bay, L-plan gabled house that was formerly a coaching inn. It faces the road and features a curved stair tower at the rear where the two wings meet. The exterior is made of painted rubble with raised sandstone margins, and it has regularly spaced windows that align with the eaves on the first floor.

On the northeast elevation, there is a pitched roof porch located off-centre to the right, which includes a small window at the front and a doorway on the west return. The east elevation, which faces the road, shows the gable end of the northern section to the right with windows to the left. There is a slightly recessed wing extending to the left that has a central doorway. At the rear, a bowed stair outshot is situated at the re-entrant angle, featuring a round arched window and a pointed-arch glazing pattern. Attached to the west gable end are single-storey ancillary buildings with large openings, and their roofs step down to follow the slope of the land.

The building has some four-pane glazed timber sash and case windows at the rear, while predominantly uPVC windows with 12-pane glazing are found elsewhere. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are coped gable head stacks with clay cans, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the stair features a curvilinear hardwood handrail and a cast iron balustrade, and some early flagstone floors remain.
