Description

The Dovecot at Stoneshiel Hall dates from around 1840 and incorporates earlier elements, with later additions and alterations. It has been converted to residential use in the late 20th century. The structure is part of a near rectangular-plan steading complex located to the southwest of Stoneshiel Hall. It features a two-storey, rectangular-plan former lectern-type dovecot at the southeast corner and a single-storey L-plan ancillary structure or store at the northeast corner. The walls enclose a courtyard to the north, east, and south, with a large modern shed situated within.

The dovecot is constructed of harl-pointed rubble with cream sandstone dressings. Its south elevation has curved corners, a part-glazed modern timber door on the outer left, triangular-headed windows in both bays at the first floor, and a large rectangular panel centered above. The east elevation shows the original block to the left with a single window at ground level offset to the right. To the right is a lower addition featuring a modern timber door at ground level on the left and a single window to the right, with a gabled dormer centered above. The windows are modern timber, and there is a rooflight. The roof is covered in grey slate. The interior was not seen in 1999.

The ancillary structure is also made of harl-pointed rubble with cream sandstone dressings, featuring rubble quoins and long and short surrounds to the openings. The east elevation has a gable end to the right with a boarded timber door at ground level on the left and a boarded timber opening centered in the gablehead, with an inscribed panel aligned above. There is a lower addition on the outer left with a boarded timber garage door. The north elevation is blind, while the south elevation has an irregularly fenestrated range to the left and a lower, gabled projection to the outer right, with various blocked or boarded openings. The roof is grey slate, with some parts covered in corrugated iron, and features stone-coped skews and decorative ridge ventilators. The interior was not seen in 1999.

The courtyard walls are tall, made of harl-pointed rubble and partially coped, enclosing the courtyard to the north, east (linking the dovecot and ancillary structure), and south.
