Description
Patie's Mill in Carlops is a former mill dated 1800 that was converted for residential use between 1964 and 1965 by Stuart Harris. A garage addition was made to the north in 1974. The building is two stories high, with a rectangular plan and a gable roof, situated beside the River North Esk at the northern end of Carlops village. It is constructed of rubble with wrought sandstone dressings. The entrance is off-centre and features a lintel stone with the date. A cast-iron water wheel is located on the northwest gable.
To the northeast, there is a gabled, L-plan garage extension made of sandstone rubble with polished ashlar dressing. This extension has an up-and-over timber door set in a segmental-arched opening, which includes a dated and monogrammed keystone, along with a narrow louvred opening above.
The windows are predominantly timber sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern, while a former high-level loading door above the main entrance has a 10-pane window. Some smaller openings at the rear feature 6-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there is a coped end stack on the northeast gable with clay cans, as well as ashlar skews and cast-iron rainwater goods.
Additionally, there is an early 18th-century sundial featuring a chamfered plinth, a Tuscan-columned shaft, and a cubed head with a metal gnomon.
