Description
The Old Mill in Davan is a former mill and wheel dating from the earlier to mid 19th century, now converted into a dwelling. The structure is built of random rubble with squared rubble quoins.
The mill and wheel housing features a tall gabled building that includes a timber-spoked wheel and an iron gear ring beneath a swept-roof outshot. On the west elevation, there is a broad wheel housing to the right with a door opening leading to the timber overshot wheel and cast-iron gearing. To the left, there is a recessed bay with a boarded timber door on the right at ground level, a square opening above, and an arrowslit-type ventilation opening to the left with a small window above. There is also a slightly lower range adjoining to the outer left.
The south elevation presents a broad gabled front with doors to the right at ground level and in the gablehead, along with a garage range adjoining to the outer right.
The courtyard ranges to the north and west have been converted into a dwelling, retaining various elements such as a slate-hung hayloft opening and traditional rooflights on the north side. The south range has been converted into a garage with a modern roof.
Throughout the building, there are small-pane modern glazing patterns, grey slates on the roof, and a coped brick stack on the mill building.
