Description
This is a drinking fountain dated 1860, situated on Main Street in Carlops. It consists of a well and drinking fountain set within a round-headed alcove. The alcove is flanked by swept, coped walls, which are topped with pyramidal finials. A cast iron lamp fixture is positioned above the archway, and a carved urn finial sits at the apex of the structure. The fountain is constructed from pale freestone and bears the initials of its donor, Hugh Horatio Brown of Newhall.
This is a well-detailed example of a mid-19th century drinking fountain. It is prominently located beside the road and enhances the character of the village streetscape. The fountain was donated by the Brown family, who resided at Newhall House in the nearby Penicuik Parish. The structure was surveyed again in 2010, resulting in an updated listing.
