Description
The Carlops Bridge is a single-span, segmental-arched rubble bridge dating to around 1800. It crosses the River North Esk at the northern end of Carlops village, providing access to Patie's Mill, which is located nearby. The bridge features roughly dressed voussoirs. It forms part of a group with Patie's Mill and Mill Lane (listed separately). The bridge’s significance is enhanced by its connection to Patie's Mill, which was converted into residential use between 1964 and 1965 (listed separately). The surrounding gorge landscape is picturesque, and the waterfall to the south, which powered an earlier mill wheel, contributes to the industrial context. The River North Esk forms the parish boundary, so the mill itself lies within the neighbouring parish of Penicuik. The bridge was re-surveyed in 2010, with its grade changed from B to C(S), and the list description updated accordingly. The bridge is shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey Map from 1856-9.
