Description
The Summerhouse at Ravenswood dates from around 1809, with alterations made around 1885 and 1892. This single-storey, three-bay structure features a single room and has a pedimented entrance bay on the west elevation. The building is canted at the rear and includes a round-arched window. It is situated on a promontory overlooking the River Tweed, north of Old Melrose House. The exterior is constructed of freestone rubble with pale ashlar dressings, and includes a cill course, eaves course, and a moulded cornice. The quoins are margined, and there is a projecting lintel above the doorway topped with a ball-finial and a moulded pediment. The north and south elevations have tall, coped wallhead stacks.
Inside, the summerhouse features a fine high Victorian decorative scheme, although the timber coved ceiling has fallen in as of 2009. There is a roll-moulded canopied chimneypiece adorned with scrolled cast-iron ornament, along with a tiled floor and glazed tile walls. The windows are fitted with timber panelled shutters and surrounds.
