Description
St Mary's Roman Catholic Church on Bowmont Street in Kelso was designed by W W Wardell from London and built between 1857 and 1858, with a chancel added around 1935. This is a simple rectangular Gothic church with four bays. The east gable features two-light windows on either side of a central stepped buttress, topped with a bell-cote at the apex. The sides of the church have paired lancet windows, and there is a gabled porch on the south side. The chancel, which is square-ended and narrower but the same height as the main body of the church, has stepped lancets on its flanks. Inside, the church has a simple unaisled layout with an open timber roof. The chancel contains an elaborate reredos, designed by Archibald Macpherson in 1916, which was added in 1935.
