Description
Beech Villa, located in Mavis Bank, Selkirk, dates from around 1865 and is a two-storey, four-bay semidetached building featuring single-storey entrance porches. The exterior is finished in painted harl with droved ashlar dressings, including a base course, quoin strips, and timber mullions.
On the southeast elevation, which is nearly mirrored, there is a single-storey porch addition at the center with a tripartite window and a boarded door on each side. A monopitch addition is attached to the outer right corner, in front of the bay to the right of center. Each of the inner bays has a bipartite window on both floors, with the first-floor window breaking the eaves in a gabled dormer. There is a window at ground level in the outer bays. The single-storey entrance porches are slightly set back, with a modern glazed porch at Beech Villa aligning with the southeast elevation of the main block. A later lean-to addition at Belmont aligns with the main block and features a boarded door flanked by windows.
The northwest elevation includes canted and half-piended windows at ground level in the central bays, with gabled bipartite windows above on the first floor, also breaking the eaves. Each intermediate bay has a boarded door with a shouldered plate glass fanlight above, set within a shouldered doorpiece, and there is a gabled canopy above each. The single-storey porch bays feature bipartite windows that are set back.
The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass, and the bipartite windows have stop-chamfered timber mullions. The roof is slate with exposed rafters at the eaves and features a gabled bipartite dormer on the outer bays of the northwest elevation. There is a coped ashlar mutual stack and another in the outer bay of Belmont.
The interior was not seen in 1995.
