Description
26 Castlegate in Jedburgh is an early 19th-century, three-storey, six-bay corner tenement that includes a tea room. The building is situated on ground that slopes down to the north, with a wynd immediately to the north. It features a stugged cream ashlar exterior, complete with a base course and cill courses on the first and second floors.
On the northwest elevation facing Castlegate, the two central bays at the ground level have plain ashlar margins. To the left, there is a panelled door with a three-pane fanlight, while to the right, a modern door is accompanied by a letterbox fanlight. There are single windows to the left and slightly larger single shop windows in the bays to the right. The upper floors contain windows in all bays, except for a blind window in the outer right bay. The corner bay is recessed and curved, with windows on the upper floors to the outer right.
The southwest elevation, facing Abbey Close, is a three-storey, two-bay facade made of finely dressed squared sandstone. The ground level features shop windows similar to those on the northwest elevation, with a modern door located between them. The left bay of the upper floors has blinded windows.
The northeast elevation presents an irregular rubble facade that steps slightly to the left. A later entrance has been created at ground level to access 24A. The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with a fixed 9-pane window in the tea room. The roof is piended, covered with grey slates, and features a coped ashlar stack.
