Description

The Masonic Hall on Castlegate in Jedburgh was designed by James Pearson Alison in 1903. This two-storey, three-bay building features a gabled Tudor style. It is constructed from red bull-faced squared and snecked sandstone, accented with red ashlar dressings and cream ashlar bands around the lintels and cills, as well as on the gable. The ground floor has a pair of corniced and architraved doors in the outer bays, which have moulded architraves and panels above that display the inscription "IN THE LORD IS ALL MY TRUST ANNO DOMINI 1903." The door on the left has a 9-pane glazed upper panel, while the door on the right is a two-leaf design with panels. Between these doors is a four-light stone mullioned window. On the first floor, there is a central three-light mullioned window flanked by single windows. The gable at the center of the elevation features ashlar coped skews with kneelers and a wallhead, and a square plaque in the center bears Masonic insignia.

The rear elevation is irregular and rendered, with a canted bay and a single-storey flat-roofed addition. The building has leaded windows, some of which are casements, and is topped with grey slates. Cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater heads frame the facade.
