Description
41 North Bridge Street in Hawick is an asymmetrical three-storey, two-bay house designed by James Pearson Alison between 1899 and 1900. The building features a two-storey canted window on the left, a crenellated parapet, and stone-mullioned and transomed windows. It is constructed from coursed red sandstone with polished dressings. A string course runs above the first-floor windows, and there is a projecting canopy over the second-floor windows.
The entrance consists of a half-glazed door with a fanlight set in a round-arched surround, which is topped by a curved, bracketed canopy. This is located within a slightly projecting two-storey bay that has a coped parapet and two windows above. The canted bay to the left has four-light windows with mullions and transoms, and a coped parapet. The second floor features a bipartite window to the right and a quadripartite window to the left.
The front of the house has modern windows, while the rear retains some four-pane timber sash-and-case windows. A coped red sandstone end stack is located on the left, topped with red clay cans, and the roof is covered with grey slate. The building also has cast-iron rainwater goods with a decorative hopper.
Inside, there is a timber staircase with a balustrade that includes winders, flat balusters, and square newels. The interior features some timber chimneypieces, with one being carved and the others plain, as well as some cornices.
