Abbey House And Adjoining Graveyard, Abbey Road, Coldstream

Abbey House, located on Abbey Road in Coldstream, dates from the late 18th century and is a two-storey house with a single-storey extension at the rear.

The garden front features a symmetrical design with three bays, constructed from rubble with ashlar dressings and angle strips. It has a wooden Regency-style porch and 12-pane sash windows. The slate roof has a straight skew with large block skewputts and brick end stacks.

On the north side, the building is partly rendered and partly rubble, again with ashlar dressings and angle strips. There are later moulded doorpieces on the left and a sash window on the first floor. The south side is rendered to resemble ashlar and also features ashlar dressings and angle strips. It includes two sash windows on the ground floor and a Venetian window on the first floor that interrupts the band course at the gable level.

The rear of the house has an early 19th-century T-plan extension made of rubble with ashlar dressings. It features one tall sash window in the projecting centre bay and tall round-headed windows with intersecting glazing at either end. The projecting bay has a pedimented design with an apex stack. The slate roof continues the slope of the main house, except for the projecting bay. There is also a lean-to greenhouse on the north side with a projecting quadrant, likely dating from around 1900.
